SOME DOGS ARE ANGELS
RECOMMENDED MOVIES & BOOKS
This movie has to be one of the all time greats for demonstrating the loyalty and trust that can be bestowed upon humans by dogs.
It is a beautifully made, superbly acted and amazingly simple story that cannot fail to leave you thinking about it for days after. It is made even more incredible by the fact that it`s based on a true story (that actually took place in Japan).
The producers stated a concern to impact upon the viewer so as to promote ``age old values of love, faith, loyalty and compassion``. They certainly succeed.
We recently showed it to our daughter Jenny. She loved it but found it ``cripplingly sad``. It is. It WILL make you cry (I sobbed for at least 30 minutes). But it`s also tender, heartwarming and wonderful. It receives our highest praise and recommendation. If you love dogs, you MUST watch it! I`ve watched in 3 times in the last 2 months.
It is perhaps an inevitability that any movie portraying suffering in animals will be heartbreaking for those who love and care for them.
However, this movie does an excellent job of portraying not only the resilience of our four-legged friends in a worse than tough situation, but also the angst of the caring and loving human, for whom nothing is more important than the protection and safety of his dogs.
Despite the appearance of the cover picture, it`s not a schmaltzy, humorous or `usual` Disney type movie. It`s gritty and even harrowing in places. But ultimately, it`s triumphant and joyous in its celebration of the relationship between humans and dogs.
I also think it`s Paul Walker`s finest performance to date as he depicts the tortured heartbreak and compassion of his character with a totally believable dignity. Another true story that`s also another weepie.
This is not a `great` movie, but I have watched it over and over again. If nothing else, it`s very good entertainment.
It`s more of a human drama that involves dogs rather than a dog story per se. It`s exciting, even putting you on the edge of your seat at times. And the ending is worth waiting for. It might even have you cheering.
I guess part of my liking comes from the fact that it involves Huskies, and since we have nine...
This is the Dorling Kindersley encyclopedia referred to in `Some Dogs Are Angels`.
I wouldn`t describe it as a coffee table book because it`s clearly meant to be used, and certainly provided us with great assistance in the past. It`s lavishly illustrated and a great point of initial reference for those seeking a dog.
It`s not comprehensive in its breed coverage (although it`s still absolutely one of the best) and naturally enough, the majority of the conclusions about dog temperament etc. are not based on personal ownership. But then, with hundreds of breeds covered, how could it be! However, this means that some of the assessments may strike you as a little strange if you know the dog.
Nevertheless, it makes a very valuable contribution to filling you in on `must knows` and `nice to knows` about dog breeds and dog ownership in general!
This is a remarkable book written by an even more remarkable lady.
It`s not about Alberta and therefore not just for Albertans! It just so happens that it was inspired by her life in this Province.
It is beautifully illustrated and peppered with deeply spiritual and profound observations about the nature of our relationship with the natural world.
It`s one of those books where you read a page and then have to think about it for a few hours...
This is our feeding bible.
It`s the original, often imitated work on the subject and easily the best.
It doesn`t have recipes. It just tells you exactly what you need to know without preaching or being in your face.
We`ve lent it out so many times and everyone who borrows it ends up getting their own copy.
It`s not for everyone, but worth considering.
